Like an earthquake: One person is killed and several others injured in a parking lot collapse in Manhattan

A parking lot collapsed on itself in New York, killing at least one person, according to city officials.

Videos of the damaged building, in Manhattan’s financial district, showed cars hanging precariously from a rutted upper floor.

Officials said at least five people were injured during the accident late Tuesday afternoon.

The parking lot is located on Ann Street about a half mile from the New York Stock Exchange.

Emergency responders and construction officials gathered at the scene, and police urged members of the public to evacuate.

New York Mayor Eric Adams described what happened as a partial collapse of the building.

“It felt like an earthquake,” said Liam Gita, a student at nearby Pace University.

He described hearing “a great, loud, loud noise, and then we were all evacuated.”

Other students described hearing screams and seeing cars crash into the building around 4 p.m. local time.

The New York City Fire Department said searches are underway to identify anyone trapped under the building.

At one point, the department said, firefighters were withdrawn due to concerns about the stability of the building.
