Teriflunomide May Delay First Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, Study Shows
A drug called teriflunomide may delay the first symptoms in people who show signs of multiple sclerosis (MS) on a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan but have not yet developed symptoms. A preliminary study, presented April 19, 2023, will be presented at the 75th meeting of the American Academy of Neurology.th The Annual Meeting will be held in person in Boston and will be streamed live online from April 22-27, 2023. This condition, called radiation isolation syndrome, is diagnosed in people who have abnormalities in the brain or spinal cord, called lesions, without symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks myelin, a fatty white substance that insulates and protects nerves. Symptoms of MS include fatigue, numbness, tingling, and difficulty walking.

Eighty-nine individuals with radiologically isolated syndromes participated in this study. Half of the subjects received 14 milligrams (mg) of teriflunomide daily and the other half received a placebo. They were followed for up to 2 years.
During the study, eight people who took the drug developed MS symptoms compared to 20 who took the placebo.
After adjusting for other factors that may influence the risk of developing symptoms, the researchers found that people taking teriflunomide had a higher risk of experiencing their first symptoms than those taking placebo. was found to be 72% lower.
“Our findings suggest that early intervention with teriflunomide may benefit people diagnosed with a radiologically isolated syndrome, a presymptomatic stage of MS.” “But more studies with larger groups of people are needed to confirm our findings,” Lebrun Frenay said. It is important to be cautious when diagnosing this condition and only select patients who are at risk of developing MS and not increase MRI misdiagnosis.”
