How LeBron James I Promise Helps During a Coronavirus Outbreak
LeBron James had a lot in mind this week.
The Lakers star was not only worried about the NBA season's suspension for at least 30 days after Utah jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. Or how a suspended or canceled season could affect James hopes to deliver to the Los Angeles Lakers their 17th NBA championship and their first in 10 years.
James also wondered how it would affect his school I Promise, a program opened in 2018 in partnership with his foundation and Akron public schools to help at-risk youth with education and resources financial.
Governor Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) announced Thursday that state and private schools will close for at least the next three weeks. James therefore discussed with Michele Campbell, Executive Director of the LeBron James Family Foundation, the possibility of keeping the programs of the Family Resource Center open so that he could still help students and families.
We have to get there, Campbell told USA TODAY Sports about James' recent conversation with her. We have to do everything we can to get there and keep those services open.
So, although I Promise School held its last day of class on Friday until further notice, the program kept its Family Resource Center open.
He partnered with Smuckers and Akron Food Bank to prepare and give care kits filled with food, toothpaste and toilet paper to its 1,443 enrolled students and their families. The center remained open to all families in need of shelter, clothing, medical care and mental health assistance. And the center has kept its hotline open.
Opening the Family Resource Center is just huge. I was very pleased that our school system allowed us to do this, said Campbell. They understand the importance of this for our families. We have built that trust by having this available over time. People are closing everywhere and doing the opposite.
This happened in part because of James, who spoke to Campbell on Friday evening to inquire about the well-being of the students on their last day of school. Campbell reported that the students are afraid and very sad not to be in school. However, when the students met Friday morning for breakfast and classes, Campbell said school officials had offered encouragement. As Campbell remembered telling them, "Even if you weren't in school, you were still there for you."
The LeBron James Family Foundation has given Akron public schools just over a million dollars a year to help pay the teachers' salaries, expand the staff so that each teacher doesn’t have no more than 20 students, after-school programs, tutors and various resources that include food, medical care, accommodation, legal aid and career development.
The I Promise program serves 343 students in grades 3 to 5 at I Promise School and approximately 1,100 students in grades 6 to 11 through the Akron I Promise network. Each program has added one year each year. so that I Promise School has an eighth grade. by the 2021-2022 school year and the Akron I Promise network will have the 12th year by the 2020-2021 school year. The school enrolled 120 new third-year students through a lottery based on low reading scores.
Overall, the program has two full-time employees, 20 part-time workers and hundreds of volunteers. But Campbell admitted that the operating budget and program staff ignored a coronavirus epidemic that would shut down public and private schools in Ohios.
My hope is that life will return to normal. But we are ready to serve them and help them through this, said Campbell. Depending on what's going on, do it face to face.
When James founded his foundation in 2004 and conceptualized the I Promise school in 2011, he knew how accessibility to food affected a person's well-being. James grew up in Akron in a single parent home and moved several times during his childhood. Campbell recalled that James' mother Gloria had once told him that she still worried that she would have enough food for (her) growing son.
So when James launched I Promise School in 2018, he wanted the program to offer more than educational resources. He wanted a family resource center. The I Promise Pantry offers unlimited food, snacks and produce for students and their families. They also have access to mittens, scarves, coats, socks, underwear, pants and toiletries. In 2019, the I Promise village opened its doors and offers transitional housing to students and families who have traumatic experiences, including evictions and domestic violence.
Still, Campbell said she, James, and others at I Promise School didn't think they had all the answers.
Did we check all the boxes and do we know what we were doing? If we were to do it, we would never have opened the school, said Campbell. You have to do it, understand it as you go, and have the right people around you.
While James is playing on hold with the NBA closed, Campbellsaid is very involved in what is going on and obviously has a voice in it.
He doesn't do this job just because of what's going on, said Campbell. He did this job when he joined the I Promise program. It is a lifelong commitment.
