STD data for 2022 show many small decreases but larger increases in syphilis
New data released by 2022 Minnesota Department of Health on STIs Syphilis cases and overall sexually transmitted infections cases have increased significantly and remain at high levels.
According to MDH, 1,832 cases of syphilis will be reported in 2022, a 25% increase from 2021 and a 440% increase from a decade ago. The number of infected people for both men and women is the highest in the past decade.
MDH was particularly concerned about the 42% increase in cases of congenital syphilis. In congenital syphilis, a pregnant person infects the baby during pregnancy or childbirth, causing various health complications in the child, or miscarriage or stillbirth in the pregnant person.
Syphilis can be tested for and treated during pregnancy, and MDH recommends further testing.
Chlamydia and gonorrhea remain the number one and second most commonly reported sexually transmitted diseases, but have decreased by 2% and 16% respectively from the previous year.
According to reports, 262 Minnesotans Diagnosed with HIV in 2022, down 12% from 298 in 2021. But MDH says more time is needed to determine the impact of COVID-19 on her HIV data for his 2020 and his 2021.
About two-thirds of people newly diagnosed with HIV last year came from communities of color. A third of the cases he was a male aged 13-24 years.
The number of people living with HIV in 2022 is 10% lower than the previous decade, when it averaged 291 per year.
HIV epidemics have continued in Hennepin and Ramsey counties since December 2018 and in Duluth counties since fall 2022.
Overall, the state recorded 32,072 STD cases in 2022, down 5% from 33,706 in 2021.
