DNV launches an industry initiative to design wind farms for earthquake zones

It is a follow-up to the previous Hurricane and Earthquake Mitigation Challenges (ACE) JIP and will include a more detailed investigation of earthquake-related issues.

The independent energy expert and assurance provider said the collaborative industry efforts will focus on geotechnical aspects and aim to increase the financial strength of future wind farms in these regions of high seismic activity.

“When we look at projections for installed offshore wind capacity worldwide, we expect Asia to overtake Europe in the 2030s and North America in the 2040s,” explained Kim Sandgaard-Mørk, Executive Vice President of Renewables Certification at DNV. “Especially in Asia and the United States, wind turbines and offshore substations must be designed to withstand challenging conditions such as earthquakes.”

Geotechnical aspects covered by the so-called ACE2 JIP include damping and liquefaction, crane installation vessels, seismic load analysis details, and specific Taiwanese and Japanese needs. The results will be used to update the DNV-RP-0585 Seismic Design Recommended Practice for Wind Power Plants, which was published in August 2021.

Markus Klose, Head of Steel Structures at DNV, said the project addresses a common industrial challenge. “One of our areas of focus will be the conditions in Japan,” he said. “Japan has the sixth-longest coastline in the world, with ambitious government targets to install 10 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. Special attention must therefore be given to typhoon, earthquake, and tsunami risks in the project design life cycle.” “The results will help accelerate discussions and project decisions in all relevant markets,” he added.

Companies joining DNV at the ACE2 JIP inaugural meeting included CDEE, Equinor, Jan de Null, Kajima, Obayashi, Ørsted, Penta-Ocean, Shell, Shimizu, Siemens Gamesa, Taisei, Van Oord and Vestas.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
