A 10-storey tower survived a false earthquake in a potential boon for high-rise wooden buildings

A 10-story tower made of mostly wood withstood a simulated 7.7-magnitude earthquake on an outdoor shaking table at UC San Diego on Tuesday, confirming some engineers’ belief that such structures can be safely used as homes and offices in areas close to large faults.

Engineers said the building did not appear to have suffered structural damage during the tremor, which was roughly the same as an earthquake that killed more than 2,400 people and destroyed more than 10,000 buildings in Taiwan in 1999.

The tower is the tallest building on a massive scale subject to a simulated earthquake of this magnitude. The test was preceded by shaking simulating the 6.7 Northridge earthquake in Southern California, which killed nearly 60 people and caused more than $13 billion in property damage in 1994.

The experiment was led by the Colorado School of Mines, one of many institutions from around the world using the UCSD shake table at Scripps Farm.

“The performance of the building was exactly as we expected it to,” said Shiling Pei, CSM architect and co-director of the project. “The building has to go back to its natural place. We designed everything to be flexible like a spring or a rubber band. You can stretch it but it will come back.”

He estimated that the top of the building moved 1 to 2 feet on each side during the peak shaking.

The test building is mainly made of plywood cross-linked with steel. It is different from the traditional high-rise buildings, which are mostly steel and concrete.
