WHO seeks to help poor Latam countries obtain “subsidized” COVID-19 vaccines
Mexico City (Reuters)-The World Health Organization (WHO) is working to ensure that “vulnerable” vaccines are “reasonably priced” when vulnerable Latin American countries become available, WHO Americas Regional Director of Carissa Etienne said Tuesday.

The Latin America region has become the center of the pandemic epidemic, with coronavirus deaths in the region on Monday exceeding North American deaths for the first time since the outbreak began.
Many Latin American countries are poor, according to Reuters data, and the healthcare system is struggling to cope with the 3.4 million cases and 146,000 deaths identified in the region.
At the virtual briefing, Etienne said the Washington-based WHO regional office, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), said, “The most vulnerable countries in the region are subsidized and affordable for the COVID-19 vaccine. To receive it.” ”
The global competition for coronavirus vaccines and treatments has made it one of the richest countries in the world. Rich countries are buying limited stocks of medicines or procuring future supplies of the most promising vaccines.
Vaccines may be somewhere apart, but Latin American countries with low budgets will struggle to compete, experts said.

PAHO has a collaborative mechanism called the “revolving fund”, where vaccines, syringes and related supplies are purchased on behalf of member countries regardless of size or economic situation.
Etienne said her organization “aggressively” negotiates with the Global Access Fund for the COVID-19 vaccine called COVAX, and “achieves the best possible conditions for the countries in the region.”
She urged these countries to participate in clinical trials to “speed up vaccine production”.
