Several earthquakes have been reported in North Carolina this month.

Canton, North Carolina – An earthquake was reported Thursday in Canton, located in western North Carolina in Haywood County near Asheville.

The USGS said the 2.4-magnitude quake occurred at 6:27 p.m. Thursday.

On May 12, a 2.1-magnitude earthquake was reported in Bienville, and on May 14, a 1.9-magnitude earthquake was reported in Cherokee County near the NC-Tennessee state line, according to the USGS. Recently, on May 23, a 2.6 magnitude earthquake was reported in Haywood County as well.

While the cause of this earthquake is not officially known, earthquakes can be caused by moving plates within the Earth.

“Eventually, it gets to the point where the physical rock can’t take it anymore. And as a result, it fails,” Scott Howard, a South Carolina geologist, told meteorologist KJ Jacobs formerly of WCNC Charlotte Weather IQ.

Other earthquakes are caused by humans. They are known as induced earthquakes and can be the result of tunnel construction and fracking projects.
