The strongest earthquake in more than a year struck Groningen

An earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale hit parts of Groningen – the most violent in over a year.

The earthquake struck around 5.20 pm on Tuesday and its epicenter is in Lubbersum. The Met Office of Meteorology KNMI received more than 300 reports in the first half hour from Groningen, 20 km southwest, as well as from Leermens, Middelstum and Zeerijp.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit the county since May 22 of last year, when a tremor measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale struck Westweekwerd, 8 kilometers west of Lubbersum.

Tennessee Becky, whose house was badly damaged by previous earthquakes that were to be demolished and replaced later this year, told Dagblad van het Noorden: “ We heard two loud explosions and went out the door. We were really shocked. You don’t know what will follow, and that’s why we got out.

Last week, the specialized agency IMG announced a mechanism to pay up to one billion euros for people living in 138 postal code areas as house prices fell as a result of gas extraction.
