Vending machines in Japan will give out free food and drink in the event of a major earthquake or typhoon.

Two devices have been installed in the western coastal city of Ako, which is located in an area that seismologists say is vulnerable to the massive Nankai-Tru quake that is expected to hit the central and southwest Pacific coast in the next few decades.

The machines hold about 300 bottles and cans of soft drinks and 150 emergency food items, including nutritional supplements. When an evacuation order is issued due to a major earthquake or similar disaster, Mainichi said, vending machines “will open, allowing evacuees access to free food and drinks.”

The Japanese newspaper said, “During normal times, vending machines like any other machines, sell their products.” So “there seems to be almost no concern about food and beverages expiring, preventing anything from going to waste.”

Its formulation is part of an agreement between the Ako municipal government and the Tokyo-based pharmaceutical company. A company spokesperson said, “We’d like to roll this out across the country as a socially oriented project.”

The radio will be activated by earthquakes that score 5 or higher on the Japanese intensity scale, and “transmitting evacuation and other vital information from a local community radio station.”

Kobe University’s Urban Safety Research Center said there is a “70-80% chance that the Nankai Trong Megathrust earthquake will occur in the next 30 years,” and “fatalities may exceed 320,000.”
