Mosquitoes in Burbank test positive for West Nile virus
BURBANK, Calif. — A mosquito in Burbank has tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Los Angeles County Vector Management District. It’s the first time in the area this year.
The peak season for the West Nile is usually summer, when the disease spreads among wild birds and spreads to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
A spokeswoman for Vector Control said it was too early to tell whether winter storms would lead to more incidents on the West Nile as this is unusually mosquito season. Mosquito numbers have been declining until recently due to cooler temperatures.
Last year, the agency first spotted mosquitoes near the West Nile in June.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who get the West Nile don’t feel sick. Only 20% of infected people develop symptoms such as fever, and less than 1% develop severe symptoms.
There is no human vaccine for West Nile virus, so the CDC recommends using insect repellents such as picaridin, IR3535, and lemon eucalyptus oil.
“When outdoors, especially at dusk and dawn, we encourage residents to protect themselves by applying insect repellent containing at least 15% of one of the recommended active ingredients,” says Culex pipiens, which infects humans. West Nile mosquitoes were detected as part of GLACVCD’s ongoing detection efforts. The agency regularly sets traps throughout its jurisdiction, counts mosquitoes and tests for West Nile and other diseases.
