Earthquake shakes Carroll County | Carroll News

A 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck Carroll County early Thursday morning, about three miles south of Healville, according to the US Geological Service (USGS).

The USGS reported that the quake occurred at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, three miles south of Healesville, at a depth of less than 4 kilometers, which means that the quake occurred near the surface of the earth.

The Healesville Volunteer Fire Department was pulled out at 6:11 a.m. for a call on Trotland Road in Healesville with a report of a person who “heard an explosion, which sent things falling off the shelves of his house.” The report also said the man was still having strength, but the earthquake shook his trailer.

He certainly wasn’t the only native of Carroll County who fell from the impact of the quake. According to the USGS website, 44 people reported feeling the quake as of 10:45 a.m. Thursday.

“At approximately 0606 hours, emergency units were dispatched to investigate reports of an explosion near Stable and Troutland Road. On arrival, units found no evidence of an explosion and received notification of a possible earthquake while on site,” the emergency services stated. in Carroll County in a Facebook post Thursday morning. “At this time, there has been no confirmed structural damage and no injuries reported.”

The Carroll County earthquake was the fourth in southwest Virginia in the past 30 days, according to the USGS, joining two near Pembroke (magnitudes 2.3 and 2.6) and one near New Castle (magnitude 2.3).
