The number of people waiting to be diagnosed with a scan is 44%, a dramatic increase.

Cancer Research in the UK said there are 55,500 people in the UK waiting to undergo a major cancer test compared to the same time last year.

At the end of May, Cancer Research UK found more than 180,000 people in the UK waiting for endoscopy-a 44% increase over the same period in 2019.

Of these people, 66% have been waiting for more than 6 weeks.

Also, 51% more people are waiting for colonoscopies and 46% more people are waiting for flexi-sigmoidscopy, which is used to detect bowel cancer, compared to the same time last year.

About 44% of patients were waiting for gastroscopy, and 23% were waiting for cystoscopy, which is used to diagnose bladder cancer, according to a charity.

The charity has also warned that endoscopy is “particularly difficult to get back on track” as the NHS tries to resume service.

This is because the tests are invasive and require more complex infection control.
