RICHMOND years: Gamble failed with Bantams management
In part 17 of Richmond years ago, City has to run after its financial meltdown leaving them a staggering £ 36m debt.
They’ve been six weeks of self-confessed insanity for Jeffrey Richmond – but City will suffer the after effects for a longer period.
The summer bragging was for 2000 when the Pantam became big with the likes of Dan Petrescu, David Hopkin, Ashley Ward, Peter Atherton and of course Benito Carbon, the price was exorbitant.
When the time came to gather, the club almost reached the wall.
In an attempt to push City to the next level after having survived the first flight on the skin of his teeth, Richmond knew he was playing with high stakes.
He later admitted, “I was well aware that the relegation from the Premier League would be very difficult to recover from.”
“You hear things and see how other clubs struggle and pray, it will not happen to us.”
By March 2002, with City stumbling in the lower half of the second level, they had to go and speak to the bank.
It was like making contingency plans for an earthquake, and you don’t get much of it in central Bradford.
Debt at that point exceeded the £ 18m mark, but Richmond remained defiant that their position was not all dismal.
A question mark hung over the future of ITV Digital and the TV deal intended to fund the Football League.
But Richmond was sure to get the next installment – and he also expected Carbon to sign Middlesbrough, as he was playing great on loan.
David Weatherall was also coveted by Manchester City and Richmond could see another player move if necessary. He described the bank’s concerns as “paranoia at the end of the world.”
“It was like making contingency plans for a possible earthquake, and you don’t get much of it in the center of Bradford,” he said in an unpublished interview.
Man City was alleged to have signed with Weatherall earlier in the season for 1.35 million pounds in addition to increasing the balance when they were promoted.
The cannons were shot at the time but Kevin Keegan’s interest remained – at least for Richmond. But things changed by the end of the season and the former England coach was looking elsewhere.
By early May, the ITV Digital balloon had risen as Richmond had anticipated at the Football League meeting six months ago as it was accused of stirring panic.
City in Nottingham Forest watched live on ITV Digital by only 1,000 viewers
Then the seismic shiver came on the Richter scale.
Middlesbrough CEO Keith Lamb Richmond called to say he wouldn’t sign a carbon.
There were reports of the Italian leaving training after a row with Steve McClaren. Boro is tired of the player’s ever-changing demands and is extremely nervous about committing themselves to a long-term deal.
Instead, they felt pulling the plug safer. Richmond left numbness holding the phone in his hand.
Just weeks ago, watch the match today as Carbon produced an irresistible offer in Borough’s victory at Old Trafford. McLaren had sung the City Man on that day – Richmond had no reason to doubt that the deal would not take place.
But Middlesbrough now changed his mind. The collapsed transportation market was the end of the world that followed the demise of ITV Digital.
Football at the top level was still full of money. Rio Ferdinand Leeds will leave for Manchester United for 30 million pounds that summer.
But there were some important moves to be made in the Football League.
Since the clubs in the lower divisions agreed with the sudden loss of television gains they had planned, the players outside the contract had no chance to attract the wages they were used to.
There was no market for the high-income people that stayed on in City Books.
Commercial bankers, as the club was trying to secure a £ 25m loan, told them to forget it. The city was alone and in deep financial crisis.
The only option was to call a company of insolvency practitioners. On Thursday May 16, 2002, they were placed in management.
After the boom, they had exploded.
Many have been rented or paid for in the club by mortgages and loans. The game ended, and the Internal Revenue demanded their money.
The agreed figure was that the city’s debt was 36 million pounds. This was an appealing tab of Richmond gambling and wanted those who owe their money to collect it.
