Belarus suffers “violent rupture” as presidential election approaches – BBC News
The former Soviet Republic of Belarus is often called the last dictatorship of Europe. The country, alongside Russia and the Baltic states, has ruled Alexander Lukashenko for more than 25 years. Opposition to him is growing, in part, in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Presidential elections are set to take place in a few weeks, but opposition activists and journalists are rounding up and imprisoning people when they say the money is wild.
