UCSF study assesses physician stress levels during coronavirus pandemics
SAN FRANCISCO, K. (KRON)-A new study shows top doctors across the country feel stressed and anxious both at work and at home.
This study, conducted by UCSF, is the first known study to assess stress levels in US physicians during a coronavirus pandemic.
Emergency medical doctors in seven cities across the country say elevated levels of anxiety and emotional fatigue.
This is not necessarily surprising, as doctors are working hard on coronavirus pandemics.
“I find it interesting because I’m used to dealing with uncertainty and constantly stressing as an emergency doctor,” said Maria Raven, “this is a new kind of different level.”
According to a new UCSF-led analysis, frontline doctors feel moderate to severe stress and anxiety both at work and at home, worry about exposing relatives and friends to the virus, and lack of rapid diagnostic tests. And I am worried about the shortage of personal protective equipment.
To Dr. Maria Raven, Head of Emergency Medicine at UCSF, her biggest concern is whether there will be a significant surge in coronavirus cases in UCSF emergency rooms.
“Everyone needs vigilance, people need to wear masks and face covers, they need to be socially distanced, they have to wash their hands, they just protect themselves. And you really have to take into account the fact that you are protecting yourself, your loved one,” said Raven.
426 emergency physicians were investigated for the study. It is headed by Dr. Robert Rodriguez, Professor of Emergency Medicine at UCFS, and is now on his way to helping the number of hospital cases in Texas increase significantly.
“It’s all new about everything I’ve done and my colleagues have done,” Raven said.
