How coronavirus affects concerts, tours and festivals, industry experts say – Daily News
The new coronavirus is already rapidly changing the music industry.
"The story is constantly evolving," said Steve Knopper of Billboard in a streaming discussion via FestForums on Monday. "Friday, we still thought there would be concerts. Today, it seems obvious that there are no concerts, which is crazy. This is something you never expect. "
FestForums, a conference for big and small festival industry leaders, visited Facebook Live to discuss how COVID-19 is affecting and will continue to affect the industry music.
The roundtable was moderated by Laurie Kirby of FestForums and starred Stephen Villoria from Backstage Pass; Manager of ARC Entertainment and Allianz Entertainment Kurt J. Miner; Founder of Meritage Entertainment Doug Richter; sports and entertainment lawyer Steve Adelman; and Shawn Simms, owner of KC Medical. Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman was supposed to be attending the conference, but was unable to do so due to illness.
Following numerous cancellations and postponements of events, the panel discussed the search for reliable sources of information, things that event planners can learn from this situation and alternative solutions to deal with it. to industry. the possibility of canceled and postponed events in, or maybe even through, the summer months.
One of the ways artists, record companies, managers and promoters have reacted is to quickly deliver online content, including live performances, which Villoria said it had to be done correctly. Latin artists Alejandro Sanz and Juanes broadcast a jam session from Miami this weekend, Rock artist Yungblud hosted the YouTube Yungblud Show on Monday morning with live performances, and Celtic punk rock band Dropkick Murphy is scheduled to broadcast his St. Patrick's Day performance. live from Boston Tuesday.
Villoria said he sees the real danger in the industry as people rush to replace the live experience with streaming content, something he says simply doesn't work not. He gave an example of that feeling that an artist feels when he knows that an audience is completely engaged in the moment.
"You cannot reproduce this online by broadcasting it," he said. "With everyone using streaming technology to replace the live experience, they lack that it is a different model and a form of "Different engagement. Online, these are your followers and your network of people, they have to be engaged. This engagement can be different and special."
He said that for festivals, streaming becomes even more of a challenge since most of the commitment to a festival comes from the audience itself.
Kirby reported that via an industry survey, FestForums found that half of the promoters had not yet had to cancel, but many of these events took place in summer or beyond and that 75% of respondents to the survey were financially affected and even lost jobs.
"One positive thing I can say is that at least our industry is good enough to work together," added Adelman hopefully. "We have to work together because we all want to survive this and the only way to do it is together."
Like the big festivals like the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival produced by Goldenvoice and its sister Stagecoach Country Music Festival, usually held over three weekends in April at Indio, was postponed until later in the year, Knopper said there could be a big boom for the post-coronavirus industry, assuming that some of the smaller, interdependent developers are able to survive financially in the coming months.
"I think our main hope is that it will be short and when it comes back, I hope it soon, I think it will really come back," he said. "Maybe I am making wishful thinking, but I think when Coachella comes back it will be a huge celebration. When people start going out to restaurants and clubs again after coronavirus it will be a good time and people will earn a lot of money. "
