Calm during Covid-19 closures of seismic noise from human activity can lead to new insights about earthquakes and volcanic activity, especially in urban areas.

The University of Auckland said that seismologists analyzed data sets from more than 300 international seismic stations – some in New Zealand – and found that the noise of human activity decreased significantly during closings.

The study provided the first evidence that previously hidden seismic signals, especially during the day, were more pronounced in seismic sensors with less noise from human activity.

Among the study participants, Dr. Zspar Van Wijk, an seismologist at the University of Auckland, was among the study participants.

He said: “One day, a volcano will explode in the Auckland Volcanic Field but it will create seismic signals before this happens, and this study reminds us that if humans make less noise, we will get early warning.”

A team of 76 researchers from 66 institutions in 27 countries worked on the study. Savage said they were able to clearly link human activity declines with fewer seismic readings.

“This is exciting for future research, because it gives us a way to track human activity on a large scale almost in real time without affecting the privacy of people, as we don’t need to track specific people or noise sources.

Researchers found a near-universal reduction in noise of up to 50 percent, starting with China in late January, followed by Europe and the rest of the world in March and April, said a report on the study, published in the journal Science.

Human activity has caused vibrations that have spread to the Earth as high-frequency seismic waves, and the largest decreases in seismic noise from these waves were found during closings in populated areas.

While the effects of closure have been strongly observed at surface seismic stations, researchers have also discovered that they are underground, including seismometers installed in wells in Auckland to reduce the effects of human activity.

One seismograph is buried 380 meters below Eden Park and another is 98 meters below Mututabo Island.

The report said that measurements of high-frequency seismic noise levels (hiFSAN) at both stations varied between days of the week and weekends before the close, indicating that both are sensitive to human activity.

While Al-Jazeera station was generally quieter, the shutdown halved the seismic noise in both stations.

It was believed that the high noise of the Mututapo station during the shutdown was due to strong winds and high waves. After the restrictions were lifted, seismic noise returned to pre-closing levels.

The report said that understanding the sources of seismic noise in urban areas is vital, as human activity affects the ability of seismic networks to detect signals associated with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The ability to analyze a full range of earthquake-capable behavior was necessary to monitor error dynamics, to predict earthquakes and to assess seismic risk.

Small earthquakes should dominate data sets but many of the smallest earthquakes were often missing.

“This detection problem is particularly problematic in populated areas, where anthropogenic noise energy interferes with earthquake signals,” the report said.

Low noise levels during closings may allow seismic signals to be detected from new sources in areas with incomplete seismic catalogs. These signals can be used to find similar activity before and after closing when there is more seismic noise.

The same approach worked with signs of tremors obscured by human activity that were vital for monitoring potential volcanic disturbances.

Any increase in the use of low-cost sensors in urban areas will need to better understand the sources of seismic noise caused by human activity to suppress false discoveries.
