Obesity increases the risk of death from COVID-19: British public health
LONDON (Reuters)-People obese or overweight are preparing to implement measures to address the issue of high risk of death or seriousness from COVID-19, the Public Health England (PHE) report said. Said on Saturday.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to work on obesity and has lost weight since being admitted to receiving intensive care at COVID-19.
PHE has a 40% increased risk of death from COVID-19 in people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-35, and healthy weight in people with a BMI greater than 40.
Persons with a BMI greater than 30 are classified as obese by this system. PHE said almost 63% of adults in the UK are overweight or obese.
“The current evidence is clear that being overweight or obese increases the risk of serious illness and death from COVID-19 and many other life-threatening illnesses.”
Mr Johnson said Friday that people should reduce their weight and that government regulations on the promotion of unhealthy foods could come next week.
“I usually don’t cheekyly believe in boss politics, but the reality is that obesity is a factor in comorbidities,” Johnson said.
Susan Jeb, a professor of diet and population health at Oxford University, said he was pleased to acknowledge Johnson to the extent of the public health crisis that Britain faces in addressing obesity.
“It was brought to the fore by COVID, and in fact it’s something we all knew, but we have never reached the top of what the government should do,” said Jeb, who reviewed the PHE report. I told the team.
