Grand Rapids, Michigan — Lyme disease has long been absent in western Michigan, but is on the rise.

“It really started in 2002, that was the first case,” says Marisa Farald, environmental health and safety expert at the Kent County Department of Health. “We have seen a significant number of cases in the last decade.”

Benjiree Lanau, Department of Health in Northern Michigan, has already reported 12 cases since June 1. By comparison, this department reports only a total of 16 cases over the past five years.

Farald says this can probably be attributed to more deer ticks that spread the disease.

“It was a mild winter for Michigan,” Farald explains. “So it wasn’t that hard. I think a lot of mites survive winter and usually not.”

Farald is in Kent County and is expected to see a similar number this year with 17 confirmed cases in 2019. Lyme disease usually causes symptoms such as a rash, fever, headache, and fatigue.

“And if left untreated, it becomes more serious,” Farald warns. “It’s like facial nerve paralysis, half-face paralysis, stiffness, arthritis, etc.”
