Angels (KTLA) — A man who spent 64 days in a Southern California hospital while being treated for COVID-19 shares his story to warn others to take the virus seriously.
Greg Garfield and his dozens of friends were infected with the new coronavirus during a ski trip in Italy in February before the pandemic actually settled in the United States.
Garfield’s case turned out to be the worst of the group, and he was admitted to the Providence St. Joseph Medical Center where he became the first patient with COVID-19. Within 48 hours of his arrival, Garfield’s condition deteriorated significantly and he was placed on a ventilator.
The doctor gave him a 1% chance of survival.
“Medically speaking, I shouldn’t be here,” Garfield told KTLA on Friday.
He checked a long list of complications he suffered as a result of respiratory illness: “From MRSA, sepsis, renal failure, liver failure, pulmonary embolism, lung rupture-four of them”.
Garfield spent a total of 64 days in the hospital, including 31 on the ventilator. According to Dr. Daniel Dee of Providence St. Joseph, mortality of ventilated COVID-19 patients is at least 70%.
However, Garfield escaped and was released early in May after a remarkable recovery.
“I am here today to stand tall,” he said. “I turned from my kidneys, my liver, my cognition to everything with 100% capacity.”
On the day Garfield returned home on May 8, Dee said his nearly complete recovery was “great.”
Garfield suffers several lifelong scars from the disease after being amputated with both hands.
“I survived this. I’m doing great. But be careful with this. My hands are,” he said, lifting the bandaged accessory and saying, “Never the same. I don’t mean to be. I have no more fingers. This happens to you.”
At Garfield, all fingers of the right hand were amputated and most of the fingers of the left hand were removed.
His surgeon, Dr. David Culver of the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said the amputation was a result of how the virus affected the patient’s bloodstream.
“COVID actually affects blood flow because it affects blood flow in blood vessels,” Kulber said. “That’s why some young people have strokes and why anticoagulation-the use of anticoagulants in patients-has become the standard treatment for COVID patients.”
The process of rebuilding Garfield’s fingers involves at least six operations. The surgeon needs to create prostheses for his fingers and help them function “like a bionic hand,” said Kulver.
The medical costs of these procedures exceed the $2 million hospital bill for his two-month stay, most of which is covered by insurance. From now on, his prosthesis will not be covered.
