A $ 2.5 million grant to keep the sewage flowing to Mac Corporation

MCKINLEYVILLE – Three sanitation lines crossing under US Highway 101 will be upgraded in McKinleyville thanks to a $ 2.54 million federal grant.

The McKinleyville Community Services Area has received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Mitigation Program which will cover 75 percent of the cost of a $ 3.4 million project to replace sewage lines running under the US Highway 101 near Hiller Park. MCSD will play a match worth $ 850,000 using sewage funds.

MCSD Board of Directors voted unanimously on July 1 to conclude a contract with GHD Inc. To design the project, complete all necessary studies, obtain permits and build management. The GHD contract is for $ 1,221,000.

Design and authorization will take place between now and June 2021, when construction will begin. Part of the project will be offered for bid.

Three tubes that cross under the US Highway 101 will be replaced, carrying the sewage from the middle of McKinleyville to the sewage treatment plan near Heller Park.

“All three crossings are expected to be replaced by a parallel HDPE pipe that is more wear-resistant in a large earthquake and slightly more capable of handling storm event flows greater than current pipes,” the Council’s Staff Report. “This independent, long-term solution will ensure that MCSD can continue to provide wastewater services, avoid contamination of local groundwater, streams and gardens with raw sewage and protect Highway 101 safety over crossings in the event of a major earthquake.”

“This is a big deal and real financial gains for the region,” DSCD director Denis Mayo said at the July 1st meeting.
