& # 39; American Idol: A student from northern New York State shines at Hollywood Week
A student from northern New York State continues to impress the judges during season 18 of American Idol.
Julia Gargano, a 21-year-old at the College of St. Rose in Albany, kicked off Hollywood Week Monday night with a cover of Brandi Carliles The Joke. She moved to the singer-songwriter category next week and was qualified as a pro with a Adele quality voice.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hollywood Week this year presents 167 candidates who got a gold ticket at the auditions, and the judges listen to them all sing solo in a specific genre: Pop, rock, R&B, soul, country and songwriter- interpreter. Gargano chose the latter, in competition with singer-songwriters like Arthur Gunn, who advanced with a cover of Otis Reddings Hard to Handle, and Marna Michele, who did not succeed until ;See you next week.
Others who advanced Monday evening were pop singers Genavieve Linkowski, Rob Taylor, Louis Knight, Demi Rae Moreno, Geena Fontanella, Shannon Gibbons, Lauren Spencer-Smith, Kimmy Gabriela, Margie Mays and Bilaal Avez; R&B singers Cyniah Elise, Makayla Phillips and Just Sam; singer-songwriters Sofia Schuster, Adam Curry, Dillon James, Francisco Martin and Jonny West; and country artists Lauren Mascitti, Hannah Prestridge and Grace Leer.
Gargano is one of the first favorites after impressing Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie with an original song called Growing Pains during the auditions. Perry said she has the potential to be among the top five candidates and that she could win this.
Gargano auditioned in Washington, D.C., in October, with the support of his family, who live on Staten Island. She celebrated her audition success with a watch party at the Madision Theater in Albany on Sunday.
