Sask. Hockey teams’ trip to the Winnipeg tournament jeopardized “a completely safe restart of the county”: Prime Minister
Saskatchewan’s Prime Minister and chief medical health officer said on Wednesday he was disappointed with hockey teams traveling to Manitoba to participate in a private tournament.
On Tuesday, CBC News reported that five teams had traveled from Saskatchewan to Winnipeg to participate in a private hockey tournament over the weekend of July 16-19. The Saskatchewan government advises against non-essential travel to other counties. Under the reopening plan of Saskatchewan,guidelines for sports and activitiesit says: “Tournaments and interprovincial competition are not allowed.”
Prime Minister Scott Moe said it was worrying that people would be selfish enough not to cancel a hockey tournament trip, while others in Saskatchewan made significant sacrifices by ignoring events such as weddings or funerals that adhere to the COVID-19 rules kept.
“I’m just disappointed that a few teams would jeopardize the entire safe reboot of the county,” he said.
“Here’s a good example of a group of people putting their own self-interest first, rather than the greater public health and safety of their neighbors, their families, and their communities.”
Dr. Saqib Shahab, the province’s chief health health officer, said he was also disappointed to learn of the teams’ participation in an inter-provincial hockey tournament.
In particular, he said he was disappointed to learn that some teams have taken measures to conceal their identities, including mentioning players only based on their initials, changing team names and telling parents that they are not on social may post media about the tournament.
“There will be a follow-up to understand why this happened and appropriate action will be taken,” said Shahab.
“We have always been very progressive in enforcing public health orders and will advise based on the initial assessment.”
The Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) said in an interview that the teams played in non-sanctioned games so they cannot be punished by the organization.
However, SHA’s general manager, Kelly McClintock, noted that the sentence can be imposed at the local level.
“Many of those people are involved in our fall and winter programming and some of those people in the local minor hockey have upset local minor hockey people,” he said.
“There may be a number of things locally, some people may not be allowed to coach. But that’s up to a local minor hockey association. ‘
Steve Silvernagle, GM of the Wheatland Wild, an organization that sent four teams to Winnipeg, has not yet commented on the situation.
Team officials previously told CBC News that a misunderstanding had arisen from an email conversation with the county’s business response team, thinking they were okay with traveling and taking part in the tournament.
The Saskatchewan government confirmed late on Tuesday evening that its corporate response team had given the wrong advice in an email in response to a post-tournament question.
“This message has since been withdrawn and corrected to be consistent with SHA’s public health reports. Currently, inter-provincial travel is discouraged, but not prohibited. Inter-provincial travel for tournament competition is not permitted at this time.” the government said. e-mail.
