Continuing interest in supporting survivors of the 2023 Turkey and Syria earthquake with the first anniversary – Syrian Arab Republic

Concern Worldwide continues to support communities affected by the 2023 Turkey and Syria earthquakes as it marks the first anniversary of the tragedy that claimed more than 55,000 lives and left millions homeless.

The Irish Humanitarian team in Turkey, who lost loved ones in the disaster, helped more than 375,000 people by providing shelter, food, cash, clean water and sanitation, and psychological and legal support.

Two successive earthquakes measuring 7.6 and 7.7 struck southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria on the night of February 6, with hundreds of aftershocks.

“The earthquakes shook our homes and workplaces and tragically many people did not survive, but we came together and did what we could to help in the aftermath,” said Shahzad Cemil, Concern Turkey Country Director.

“Millions of people have been affected across eastern Turkey as well as in northwest Syria where my Concern colleagues responded to the disaster.

“We are proud of our response and extremely grateful to our donors who continue to support our work with communities displaced by the earthquake. Our donors include Irish Aid, the European Union, the Disaster Emergency Committee, Community Chest Korea, and the US Humanitarian Assistance Office.

“Attention will continue to support the efforts of the Turkish government until the population affected by the disaster recovers.

“We greatly appreciate the amazing response of the Turkish people and government to this massive disaster. Their response was remarkable given the scale of the disaster.

“Concern already had a presence in the affected provinces where they were able to respond quickly because we had been working in Turkey for ten years helping refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria.

“Our team members suffered devastation and lost their loved ones. We continued our operations in places severely affected by the earthquake in Hatay, Adiyaman, Malatya, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Kahramanmaraş and Osmaniye.

More than 15 million people were affected by the earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria.
