UN Representative Wignarajah visits earthquake victims in Herat

Kani Wignaraja, Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), on a trip to Angel district in Herat, told TOLOnews that the UN will cooperate with the victims of the Herat earthquake until they reach a normal life.

According to Wignaraja, in addition to the earthquake, earthquake victims are also affected by climate change and drought.

On her trip to Shahak village in Angel district to deliver temporary homes to families affected by the earthquake, Wignaraja said that the only way out of the economic crisis in Afghanistan is to provide equal opportunities in education and work for women and men.

Kani Wignaraja said that “this is the beginning” and things are moving towards a better situation, so it is important to build permanent shelters for earthquake victims so that they can return to normal life in the community. She also said schools, clinics and a system of access to healthy drinking water should be provided to earthquake victims.

In a meeting with a number of rural women, she emphasized support for Afghan women, and said that in order to save Afghanistan from the economic crisis, it is necessary to provide equal educational and work opportunities for women and men.

Residents of the earthquake-stricken village of Shahak, who have been living under tents for months, said they were happy to build temporary shelters. They asked local institutions to build permanent homes for them.

“We had no shelter in this cold weather, but now I am very happy,” said Abdul Hakim, a resident of Injil area in Herat.

Muhammad Daoud, a resident of the district, said, “They provided us with solar panels and household appliances that we did not have with these homes, and we are happy to help them.”

UNDP also reconstructed a canal in Parwana village in Injil district of Herat state. This canal supplies water to 600 acres of agricultural land.
