Scientists are recording a “super swarm” of underwater earthquakes that could soon lead to a volcanic eruption

Scientists have detected a “super swarm” of earthquakes off the coast of Washington, estimating that as many as 200 earthquakes could occur in an hour on a single day.

University of Washington geologists said the earthquakes could trigger an eruption on the Juan de Roca Ridge volcano within a few weeks or years, but the effects on the ground would likely be mild and not have a major impact.

The underwater volcano is located more than 16,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean and about 150 miles off the coast of Washington.

Since more than a thousand small earthquakes were detected in a single day, this is the largest number of activity detected at the site since 2005, and scientists have claimed that the volcano could erupt soon.

The team claimed that the data that will be collected when the volcanic eruption occurs will reveal how the Earth's crust is formed over time by cooling magma.

On March 6, the group's real-time monitoring network detected the quakes and recorded a magnitude of 4.1.

Scientists hint at possible 'imminent magma rupture'

According to Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), recurring earthquakes will occur several days after a “big swarm” of earthquakes.
