11 more aftershocks shook New Jersey overnight after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake

Aftershocks from the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck New Jersey and reverberated in the northeastern part of the country on Friday continued overnight, according to preliminary data from the US Geological Survey.

Officials reported 11 aftershocks in Hunterdon and Somerset counties between 5 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday.

Aftershocks are a series of small tremors that follow the larger “mainshock” of an earthquake, and those that occurred overnight were all less than magnitude 2.

While the main quake was felt as far away as Massachusetts, seismic activity was concentrated during the night near the Ramapo Fault.

There were nearly 20 aftershocks between Friday when the quake occurred and Saturday morning.

Experts say there is about an 80% chance that our region will experience an aftershock of magnitude 3.0 or higher within the next week, and about a 15% chance of an aftershock of magnitude 4.0 or stronger.

Aftershocks usually become less frequent over time, “although they can last for days, weeks, months or even years in the case of a very large mainshock,” the agency says.
