The number of aftershocks from a New Jersey earthquake rises to 34 after Friday's major quake. More expected.

More earthquake aftershocks continued in New Jersey Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing the two-day total to 34 smaller aftershocks after Friday's 4.8-magnitude quake.

The strongest aftershock so far occurred just before 6 p.m. on Friday, with a magnitude of 3.8, near Gladstone. There have been nine aftershocks of at least magnitude 2.0 since the quake that occurred at 10:23 a.m. Friday in Hunterdon County.

Experts say that more aftershocks are likely to occur this week. Aftershocks decline over time, but they can “last for days, weeks, months or even years in the event of a very large mainshock,” USGS officials said.

Experts expect an approximately 80% chance that an aftershock of magnitude 3.0 or higher will hit the region within a week. They also said the area had a 15% chance of one strength reaching 4.0 or stronger.

The last aftershock reported by the US Geological Survey was at 7:16 pm on Saturday.
