Earthquake-prone West Java; BMKG asks the public to be adaptive and proactive in disaster mitigation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – In the wake of a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Garut district, West Java, the head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, highlighted the region's history of repeated earthquakes dating back to 1844 in areas such as Garut. Cianjur, Tasikmalaya, Pangandaran and Sukabumi. The intensity of seismic activity is very high, with the possibility of several earthquakes occurring within one year.

On the same occasion, Dwikorita said that data collected by BMKG indicates the possibility of light to very intense rains in West Java. She expressed concerns about the potential dire impact of extreme weather, especially in mountainous areas such as Garut and Cianjur.

She said that the fragile slopes in these areas are vulnerable to soil liquefaction due to saturation with rainwater, especially after an earthquake, which could lead to possible landslides and the formation of natural dams in river valleys.
