The Indonesian city of Sukabumi was struck by a 4.1-meter earthquake from the Sipamenkes Fault

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A 4.1 magnitude tectonic earthquake shook the Sukabumi city area and surrounding areas in West Java on Tuesday, May 28, at 16:20 local time.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the quake was shallow, 24 kilometers deep and centered at sea, about 83 kilometers southwest of downtown Sukabumi.

“The earthquake is believed to have been the result of activity on the Sipamenkis Fault,” Hartanto, head of BBMKG District II in Tangerang, said in a written statement on Tuesday, May 28.

In the Sipamenkes area, residents could feel the shock of the MMI 3 earthquake, as people inside the house could feel vibrations similar to a passing truck.

Meanwhile, in Pongbulang and Siklet, the quake was felt on the MMI II to III scale, strong enough to cause light-hung objects to sway.

According to BMKG, there were no reports of damage to buildings as a result of the earthquake. BMKG monitoring results as of 16:40 showed no aftershocks.
