WHO member states agree on how to further conclude the Pandemic Agreement
The World Health Assembly (WHA) today recognized the progress made by member states over the past two years in developing an agreement on the pandemic and strengthening the International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005). Governments meeting in Geneva at the Seventy-Seventh World Health Assembly are discussing advancing these two efforts, which aim to increase the world's ability to better prevent and respond to the threat of future pandemics.
WHO member states agreed to continue work during the World Health Assembly, which ends on June 1, with the aim of:
- complete the package of amendments to the IHR (2005)
- agree on the time, format and procedure for concluding the pandemic agreement.
During today's session, the WHA first considered agenda item 13.4 on the draft agreement on the pandemic. Delegates took note extensive work undertaken by Member States Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB), and the Office that manages the work, since the governments initiated the process in December 2021 develop the world's first pandemic agreement to prevent a repeat of the global health, economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Member States reiterated that the world needs a pandemic agreement built on the principles of equality, sovereignty and prevention, preparedness and response, and to ensure that future generations are protected from the threat of inevitable future pandemics.
WHA delegates also considered agenda item 13.3which outlined the work undertaken to negotiate about amendments to the International Health Regulations(2005) to build on lessons learned from the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Member states have emphasized that an agreement on updated and stronger international health regulations is crucial to ensuring global health security.
