Tennessee doctors concerned about trend of STDs among pregnant women
Hamilton County, Tennessee — Syphilis is spreading across Tennessee.
According to doctors, the trend is on the rise among pregnant women in the state, which is alarming.
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that causes symptoms such as sore throat, headache, and fever.

Doctors in Tennessee say they're seeing a surge in syphilis cases in the state, especially among pregnant women.
Hamilton County From 2017 to 2021, the number of cases has increased by 235%.
Doctors say they've seen a particular spike in congenital syphilis.
This is when a pregnant woman passes the infection on to her baby.
Doctors at Vanderbilt University say the spike means more testing during pregnancy is needed.
One doctor said 70 percent of pregnant women infected with syphilis don't have access to adequate prenatal care with regular testing.
Dr. Walter DeHority, associate professor of pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital, said…
“Syphilis can be contracted and not cause problems until years or even decades later. Cases of congenital syphilis have increased tenfold in the past 12 years. There used to be one case a day in the United States; now there are 10 cases a day.”
The Hispanic population has seen the steepest rise in these cases, according to data from the Hamilton County Health Department.
Another problem contributing to the surge, doctors say, is a shortage of the drug Bicillin, which is used to treat syphilis in pregnant women.
