Measles-infected person passes through Seattle airport
According to the Department of Public Health, a person infected with measles passed through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on May 10 and 11.
SEATTLE-TACOMA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Washington — Travelers who passed through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on May 10 and 11 may have come into contact with someone infected with measles, according to a statement from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. According to the Department of Public Health, the infected traveler is from Arizona and likely acquired measles during travel to or within Europe. The person's measles vaccination status is unknown.
“Measles is highly contagious, and if you don't have immunity, you can get it just by being in a room with someone who has measles,” said Dr. Eric Chou, infectious disease chief for the Seattle-King County Public Health Department.
The traveller with measles was in the S Concourse (Gate S1) between 5:30 and 9:30 pm on May 10, cleared customs and proceeded to international baggage claim carousel 19.
The next day, the traveller travelled from A Concourse to Gate A8 between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The time frame provided by Public Health includes the traveller's actual time of arrival and two hours thereafter.
The traveller had been at the airport before being diagnosed with measles, and Public Health said the measles virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after a person with measles has left the area.
Measles is highly contagious and can cause symptoms including fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes, according to the Department of Public Health. When a person with measles coughs or sneezes, it can spread through the air if precautions are not taken, according to the Department of Public Health.
People who may have come into contact with an infected traveller and who do not have immunity to measles are likely to develop symptoms within one to three weeks of infection, between May 17 and June 1.
Chow said now is an important time to check your vaccination status and get vaccinated if you're not protected.
“Fortunately, the measles vaccine is highly effective,” Chou said in a statement. Two doses of the measles, mumps, rubella and rubella (MMR) vaccine provide about 97% protection against measles infection over a lifetime, he said.
Those most at risk are infants and children under 5, adults over 20, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems, according to the Public Health Agency.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded 113 cases as of April 5. There have been seven outbreaks to date, and the majority of US cases (73%) are linked to those outbreaks.
