The US Geological Survey (USGS) has announced a new update to its earthquake alert app that aims to provide advance notice seconds before some of the strongest earthquakes strike.

The ShakeAlert early earthquake detection system can detect earthquakes of all sizes, but this update allows the agency to determine the size of the largest earthquakes faster, so alerts can be sent to people's phones faster.

“Seismic stations tell us how fast the Earth is moving, and these other stations tell us how much it is moving, and by looking at them together, we can get a better idea of ​​how those large earthquakes will affect the region,” he said. As new technology develops, the ShakeAlert team is also working with hospitals and transportation teams to ensure automated steps are taken immediately as well.
