What I learned from today's puzzle
- HUGO (65A: Health inspector in “Bob's Burgers”) Bob's Hamburgersis an animated sitcom centered on Bob and Linda Belcher and their children. As the name of the show suggests, the Belchers own a burger restaurant. Although I have seen a few episodes of Bob's Burgers, I'm not familiar enough with the series to remember that HUGO is the name of the health inspector, so I needed the help cross-referencing the answers here. HUGO (voiced by Sam Seder) resents Bob and frequently considers closing the restaurant.
Random Thoughts and Interesting Things
- LSU (20A: “Geaux Tigers!” univ.) The Louisiana State University (LSU) athletic teams are known as the Fighting Tigers and the Lady Tigers. A common cheer for sports teams is “Geaux Tigers!” » (pronounced “Go Tigers!”). The spelling is a nod to the “-eaux” which is a common ending in French Cajun names.
- PUNNY (23A: as many pho restaurants are called) Pho (pronounced FUH) is a soup originating from Vietnam and consisting of broth, rice noodles, meat, and herbs. The name of this soup lends itself particularly well to the names of PUNNY restaurants, such as Good Pho You, Pho Real, Pho King Delicious, What the Pho, and Pho-nomenal, to name a few.
- SEE (33A: “I'm having his baby / No, I'm not, but you should SEE your faces”) “I'm having his baby / No, I'm not, but you should SEE your faces”, is a line from the song, “But dad, I love him.” This song is taken from Taylor Swift's album, THE DEPARTMENT OF TORTURED POETS, released in April of this year. This is the first of three clues in this puzzle containing lyrics from Taylor Swift's latest album.
- LANAI (46A: Hawaiian Porch) A LANAI is a type of covered porch or veranda with open sides. LANAI is also the name of one of the Hawaiian Islands, the third smallest of the eight main islands.
- GIS (52A: karate outfits) GIS are traditional outfits for karate practice and competition. GIS are similar to judo outfits, but made of lighter material and with a looser fit.
- SPINE (54A: “My ___ split from carrying us up the hill”) Here’s our second lyric clue. “My SPINE split from carrying us up the hill” is from Taylor Swift’s song, “Goodbye, London.”
- IDOL (64A: Very admired person) and ICON (56A: Very admired person) This is a nice echo of the clue. And of course, ICON and IDOL are appropriate answers to find in this Taylor Swift themed puzzle.
- GINS (67A: herbal liqueurs) GINS are flavored with juniper berries and other herbal ingredients. GINS were originally produced for medicinal purposes as early as the 11th century, hence the addition of the medicinal herb juniper. GIN has evolved greatly since the 11th century, and there are hundreds of varieties of GIN.
- EVS (4D: Cars That Must Be Plugged In (Abbr.)) I love seeing the mention of electric vehicles, or EVS, in the network. Even though my husband and I have had our EV for almost two years now, it still makes me smile to see our car plugged into an outlet in the garage.
- STERNO (6D: Camper Fuel Source) STERNO is a brand of fuel designed to be burned directly in the can it comes in. STERNO is used by campers as a portable fuel source for cooking. STERNO is also used by caterers under serving platters at buffets to keep food warm. A 200ml can of STERNO will burn for up to two hours.
- PLETHORA (40D: Abundance) PLETHORA is a fun word. I like the way it sounds. I have a brainstorming spreadsheet that I use to write down ideas for future crosswords. One of the tabs on the sheet is titled “Fun Words” and PLETHORA is one of the words on that list. I don’t know if I’ll ever do anything with these “fun words,” but I like collecting them!
- EAST (51D: direction LA-Phoenix) North-south-EAST-west directions and geography are not my strong point. Often when I come across clues like this, I skip over them until I get a clue by cross-referencing the answers. However, it was accessible even for me who had directional difficulties. LA (Los Angeles) is in California and Phoenix is in Arizona. Arizona is located EAST of California.
- LE (62D: “Now I’m depressed, I cry at ___ gym”) Here’s our third lyrical clue from THE DEPARTMENT OF TORTURED POETS. “Now I'm in a bad way, I'm crying at the gym,” are the lyrics to Taylor Swift's song, “Down, bad.”
- PET (63D: Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson or Benjamin Button, to Taylor Swift) Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button are Taylor Swift's PET cats. That's right, Taylor Swift and I are both cat lovers. We look so much alike! (As well as being an extremely talented singer-songwriter, ICON and IDOL.)
Crossword Theme Synopsis
- LET'S GO OUT (17A: “We shouldn't be having this conversation in front of people”)
- IF ALL GOES AS PLAN (25A: “Assuming all goes as I hope…”)
- SPOILER-FREE POST (48A: update on social networks which does not reveal any twists, for example)
- WE CANNOT BE STOPPED (61D: “Nothing will stand in our way now!”)
Each topic response contains a TORTURED (i.e. anagrammed) version of the word POETS: LET'S STEP OOUTSIDE, IF ALL GOES WELLES TO PLAN, SPOILER-FRIIT'S FASTand WE CANNOT BEmergency stopPED.
This is a hidden anagram themed puzzle based on the word POETS. Who am I kidding? The theme of this puzzle is actually Taylor Swift! Homage puzzles sometimes get a bad reputation. It doesn't bother me, but some people find them annoying. This puzzle is a masterclass in how to properly complete a tribute puzzle. The title of Taylor Swift's latest album, THE SOCIETY OF TORTURED POETSlends itself to a hidden anagram theme. The four responses to the theme are fun phrases that span the entire grid. Then we have the bonus content of clues that incorporate album lyrics, the words ICON and IDOL, and even the names of Taylor Swift's PETs. Good game ! Thank you, Amanda, for this excellent riddle.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
