Imran Dispels Rumors of PTI's 'Forward Bloc' – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday dispelled the impression of any forward bloc within the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and said a decision regarding PTI defectors was yet to be taken.

After the $190 million corruption trial, in which the court granted bail to his wife, Bushra Bibi, Mr Khan said there were no major differences among party leaders. He, however, admitted a split among some party leaders and said he would talk to them during their routine visit to Adiala jail on July 4.

Referring to the US Congress resolution on Pakistani elections, he said that the national and international media had raised questions about the transparency of the February 8 elections. He criticised the government for refuting the resolution and said it was high time for introspection. He said the resolution could not be termed as US interference as it questioned the transparency of the elections, unlike encryption which threatened the elected regime. He added that he stood by his remarks on Donald Lu's interference in Pakistan's internal affairs.

He also criticized the government for imposing taxes and raising prices instead of cutting its own spending in the budget. He warned that the budget would fuel inflation.

Bushra Bibi released on bail in $190 million corruption case

He said the time had come to pull the country out of the crisis, suggesting that fresh, fair and transparent elections were the only solution. He added that a government elected with the mandate of the people could bring about the necessary reforms to revive the economy and end the miseries of the common man.

Mr Khan complained that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was allowed to meet dozens of party leaders in prison but was denied even a simple paper. He also accused intelligence officers of running the prison administration.

The former prime minister has already filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking judicial intervention in the Rawalpindi Central Jail cases, alleging that the jail was being run by the spy agency officials. In the petition filed through his lawyer Shoaib Shaheen, Mr Khan claimed that the jail was virtually controlled by a major and a colonel of the ISI.

Bushra Bibi granted bail

Earlier, Judge Mohammad Ali Warraich of the accountability court had granted bail after arrest to Mr Khan's wife Bushra Bibi in a $190 million corruption case.

During the hearing, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Deputy Attorney General Sardar Muzaffar Khan Abbasi informed the judge that the NAB chairman had never issued an arrest warrant against Bushra Bibi in this case. Later, the court granted her bail. But she was not released due to her conviction in the Iddat case.

During the trial, the judge cross-examined three other witnesses. A total of 27 witnesses have been cross-examined in this case so far.

NAB Special Public Prosecutor Amjad Pervaiz, while concluding arguments on Mr Khan's bail plea in the case, informed the Islamabad High Court that the trial of the former prime minister and his wife was about to conclude.

He said about 10 to 15 witnesses out of the 59 prosecution witnesses would be dismissed.

The gist of the allegations against Mr Khan, as per the reference, is that he, as the then Prime Minister, on a note from Mirza Shahzad Akbar, the then Chairman of the Asset Recovery Unit (ARU), referred the matter to the Federal Cabinet on 3rd December 2019, and obtained approval for execution of the Confidentiality Deed as a Legal Framework Agreement between the National Crime Agency, UK (NCA, UK) and the family of Malik Riaz for repatriation of the sum of Rs 190 million into the accounts of the Supreme Court, established for the purpose of payment of the liability of Bahria Town (Pvt) Limited for the land allotted to it in Malir.
