Cricket team finishes second in first tournament of the season
On June 25, Niagara College hosted an Ontario College Recreation (OCR) cricket tournament at the Niagara Cricket Centre in Thorold. Participating colleges included Conestoga, Humber, Mohawk, Seneca and Sheridan, who traveled to Niagara for the day-long event.
“The tournament went extremely well and all schools had a great day of cricket. The rain held off, but there was a strong wind that the bowlers had to overcome, which created challenges for our later matches,” said Jenna Wilson, Campus Recreation Coordinator, Athletics and Student Engagement.
NC played a strong tournament going 2-0 in round robin play with wins over Mohawk College (78-74) and Seneca College (81-80). The Knights faced Humber College in the championship game with Humber eventually winning (125-78).
Conestoga College (97-79) won the consolation final against Seneca College and also received the tournament's Fair Play Award for their respectful play and helpful attitude both on and off the court.
“I am beyond proud of the way our Niagara College team assembled and played all three games,” said Wilson.
NC's extramural cricket team was founded last year in response to strong demand and interest in the sport from international students. The 15-player team is comprised of students from various programs on the Welland and Daniel J. Patterson campuses representing multiple countries.
Ronan Wijegunaratne, a former player from last year's cricket team and a recent graduate of NC's, returns to coach the team this year. Business – Sales and Marketing program.
“The way the boys played all day was unbelievable,” said coach Wijegunaratne, who was born in Sri Lanka and raised in Dubai, UAE. “As coach for the Knights this year, I have the privilege of working with each player and helping them develop as players and perform at their best.”
Also returning this year is Captain Aakash Arora, a strong player who was the team’s captain last year. Arora, from Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India, is an alumnus of NC’s Hospitality and Tourism program (2023) and a current International Business Management student.
“I believe that as long as the boys play as a team with the guidance of Aakash, they will definitely be able to develop and improve their game and win for us,” said Wijegunaratne, who noted that Arora is one of the best cricketers in the Niagara region. “We may not have got the result we wanted against Humber in the final, but I am sure the boys will be stronger.”
The team will then compete in the next OCR tournament on July 25 at Mohawk College.
