Erdogan hopes West will pressure Israel to sign Gaza ceasefire
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that Western countries must pressure Israel to accept the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal, which he believes is achievable.
“After US President Joe Biden's phone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, I hope that a definitive ceasefire will be reached in a few days so that the recent massacres committed by Israel will end,” Erdoan told reporters on his return flight from Kazakhstan.
The head of Israel's intelligence service was expected in Qatar on Friday for the latest effort to free hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, nearly nine months after Israel began its brutal war on Gaza.
A source familiar with the discussions said the Israeli delegation led by David Barnea, head of the Mossad intelligence service, was traveling to the Gulf emirate for talks “aimed at bringing the parties closer to a deal in Gaza.”
The Gaza war, which has raised fears of a wider conflagration involving Lebanon, began with a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 that killed 1,195 people, mostly civilians.
In response, Israel carried out a military offensive that killed at least 38,011 people in Gaza, mostly civilians.
There has been no respite in the war since a week-long pause in November saw the release of 80 Israeli hostages in exchange for 240 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
The war has uprooted 90 percent of Gaza's population, destroyed much of the coastal territory's housing and other infrastructure and left nearly 500,000 people facing “catastrophic” hunger, according to the United Nations and other world bodies.
Erdogan criticized Western countries for supporting Israeli plans to expand the war into Lebanon, after fresh Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon.
Israeli forces regularly exchange fire on the border with Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Turkey has pledged solidarity with Lebanon and has been a vocal critic of Israel, welcoming Hamas leaders and welcoming the Palestinian resistance group as a liberation movement, unlike much of the Western world.
Ankara has repeatedly called on the UN Security Council and the United States, Israel's main military supplier, to put pressure on Israel to accept a ceasefire proposal.
