Clash with Biden debate performance | News, Sports, Jobs

Disappointment and despair. These were my feelings when the June 27 presidential debate turned to the question of whether we are facing an existential climate crisis.
For me, as a Catholic, I agree with Pope Francis that the world is facing extreme weather changes and a climate crisis that threatens “humanity's existence”.
Francis writes that ignoring climate change will only increase the crisis. The Holy Father has also criticized climate change deniers and delayers. (see the treatise Laudato si of Pope Francis on “care for our common home – 2015 and Laudate Deum 2023).
The extreme changes in weather—even here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula—should be obvious to all. Nationwide, nearly 90% of Americans experienced an extreme weather event in the past 5 years. (Survey from the University of Chicago).
Unfortunately, former President Trump has been a climate change denier, calling the climate crisis a “fraud” and during his administration he lifted environmental restrictions on air and water pollution.
President Trump has also praised coal and oil power, blasted solar and wind power with false words, and pulled the US or the Paris climate agreement — accepted by more than 200 countries.
President Biden later reinstated the US in the Paris Climate Agreement. At the June 27 debate, Donald Trump had the opportunity to announce a change of heart and express his understanding that humanity faces an existential climate crisis.
Instead, the former president avoided the case — falsely claiming he turned it in “Pure pure water and absolutely pure air.” I was very disappointed. But my disappointment turned to despair as President Biden failed to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his climate inaction and lies, and missed the opportunity to point out how much President Biden has done to promote clean energy, especially the billions in funding for clean energy under the Biden Inflation Reduction Act.
I hope Upper Peninsula voters will consider the climate crisis a major issue in this year's election.
