Xi Jinping calls for emergency response, rescue after dam bursts in central China
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for all-out rescue and relief efforts to protect lives and property after a dam on Dongting Lake in central China's Hunan Province burst Friday afternoon.
Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks in an instruction.
On Friday afternoon, a dike of Dongting Lake burst in Tuanzhou Township, Huarong County, Yueyang Municipality, Hunan Province, causing flooding in the area. All affected people have been safely evacuated.
Xi, who is on an overseas visit, stressed that residents in threatened areas should be evacuated in a timely manner and properly resettled, adding that all-round rescue operations should be carried out to protect the safety of people and property. He asked the National Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters to send a team to strengthen the guidance.
Xi stressed that since China entered the major flood season, some areas of the country have experienced heavy rains for a prolonged period, leading to a severe flood control situation. Prolonged erosion of dikes by water can lead to dangerous situations, posing significant risks and hidden dangers.
Local Party committees, governments and relevant departments should act quickly and mobilize their forces to carry out flood prevention, disaster relief and emergency relief operations. They should strengthen inspections of dikes and promptly identify and deal with any potential risks to ensure safety, Xi said.
Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Premier of the State Council, ordered that all-out efforts be made to deal with the emergency, control the development of the situation, properly accommodate the affected people and strengthen the patrol of reservoirs and dikes.
Mr. Li urged the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters to strengthen early warning and consultation, as well as guidance and supervision of all localities and departments in flood control and disaster relief work.
According to Xi Jinping's instructions and Li Keqiang's request, the National Flood and Drought Control Center, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Emergency Management have sent working groups to the scene.
