Google Pixel 9 expected to launch with ultrasonic fingerprint reader

Google Pixel smartphones have historically been plagued by several issues that have recurred throughout the various generations of the series.

Issues reported include outdated camera sensors, a limited wide-angle camera, and slow charging speeds, while a temperamental fingerprint sensor has also been an issue.

As reported by Android Authority, Google is set to bring the fix by introducing an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner to the upcoming Pixel 9 series. The biometric security upgrade is said to be rolling out across the entire series, including the standard Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and the new Pixel 9 Pro XL.

All of them are equipped with Qualcomms 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) sensors, and the ultrasonic capabilities are said to be more durable and performant than optical sensors – they are said to be faster, more accurate, and less affected by moisture and residue on users' fingers.

Intent signals from Google

The addition would address some of the criticism that has been levelled at the tech giant, particularly its Pixel series, which will feature the same technology found in Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, but could be a signal of Google's intentions.

The company currently lags behind Samsung, Apple and Motorola on the 2024 top phone sales list, but may be aiming to convince the market that it aims to match the quality and performance of its rivals.

Not all Google devices will receive this improved feature, with the Pixel Fold 2 expected to retain the side capacitive sensors.

The timing of the sensor upgrade appears to be aligned with the planned announcement of the Pixel 9 series on August 13, an earlier-than-usual launch for Google as it seeks to grab a bigger share of the smartphone market.
