Erdogan expected in Berlin shortly before Euro quarter-finals
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to arrive in Berlin shortly before Turkey's Euro 2024 quarter-final against the Netherlands later on Saturday, amid controversy over UEFA's ban on Turkish player Merih Demiral.
Erdogan will arrive in Berlin shortly before the 9:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) kick-off at the Olympic Stadium and leave the same evening, Erdogan's office told dpa.
No further appointments have been announced in Germany so far.
Erdogan has yet to comment on the two-match suspension imposed by UEFA on defender Demiral.
Demiral made a wolf's head shape with his fingers after his second goal in a 2-1 win over Austria in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
The controversial wolf salute is attributed, among others, to a far-right movement. The movement known as LKC or Grey Wolves is linked to Erdogan's political allies, the ultranationalist MHP in Turkey.
Erdogan dismissed criticism of the gesture, saying the player had only expressed his “enthusiasm”.
UEFA's decision sparked outrage in Türkiye.
Turkish television channel TRT called the decision a “scandal” while football federation president Mehhmet Bykeksi called it “unacceptable, illegal and political.”
Some Turkish football fan groups have called on fans to perform the wolf salute at the Olympic stadium in Berlin.
