Former Pakistani PM Imran Khan considers hunger strike if not tried

Islamabad: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has asked Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa to recuse himself from the benches hearing cases related to the political party, Pakistan-based Dawn reported.

PTI founder Imran Khan also said he was considering going on hunger strike if he continued to be denied justice.

Speaking to reporters after attending the trial in the $190 million corruption case on Friday, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said the decision on such cases should be taken on the basis of “like or dislike” as all citizens are equal before the law.

He said all other cases involving the PTI were settled before Chief Justice Isa despite his lawyer's objection to the presence of the chief justice on the bench. The PTI founder said his legal team wanted these cases to be moved out of Courtroom 1, according to the Dawn report.

Imran Khan reiterated his allegation that Adiala Jail was being run by a colonel or a major and added that the jail superintendent was serving “under their command” which did not allow him to meet PTI leaders.

Some PTI leaders had come to the jail to meet Imran Khan over the party's internal disputes. However, the jailer, as per the instructions of the military officer, did not allow them to meet Imran Khan for at least three hours, Dawn reported.

Imran Khan said he was considering going on hunger strike and would do so if he was denied justice. Speaking to reporters, Khan said he would advise his leadership not to make internal differences public as it would divert attention from the real cause. The PTI founder further said that the recent budget had already buried the politics of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Meanwhile, PTI Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan demanded that the Chief Justice of Pakistan recuse himself from all PTI-related cases as they had reservations against him, the report said.

Speaking on the occasion, PTI lawyer Shoaib Shaheen said the party wanted decisions to be taken on the basis of law and the Constitution. He added that the CJP should not remain on the bench as the party and its leader had expressed reservations against him.

PTI leader Shaukat Basra said all 180 PTI lawmakers in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies across the country would appear before the court to express their reservations. Khan (71), who was the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, has been lodged in Adiala Jail since August 2023 on multiple charges.
