Imran Khan's party vows to hold public rally in Islamabad despite NOC suspension

Islamabad [Pakistan]July 6: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub has said that the party's public rally in Islamabad will take place as scheduled today despite the authorities suspending the No Objection Certificate (NOC), Pakistan-based ARY News reported.

In a statement, Ayub said the PTI had obtained permission to hold a public rally after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered it to do so. He added that the PTI would not be deterred by the government's attempts to restrict its political activities.

Omar Ayub said that the government had taken this decision out of fear and was trying to prevent the rally from taking place. He added that the PTI was preparing for the rally and workers were gathering to attend it, according to an ARY News report.

The PTI leader's statement comes after the Islamabad Chief Commissioner suspended the No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued to the party for public gatherings just a day before the scheduled public gathering.

The decision to suspend the NOC issued to the PTI was taken at a meeting chaired by the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad, during which security agencies expressed reservations over the potential risks associated with the rally, ARY News reported.

Authorities said the decision to suspend the NOC was taken to ensure the maintenance of law and order in the city. Authorities stressed that the safety of the people is their top priority and all necessary measures must be taken to ensure the maintenance of peace and tranquility in the city.

The Islamabad district administration has granted permission to the PTI to hold a public rally near Tarnol Chowk on July 6, ARY News reported. After the issuance of the public rally permit, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) decided on the petition seeking issuance of the public rally permit. Justice Babar Sattar of the Islamabad High Court heard the petition, which sought permission to hold a PTI meeting in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, PTI founder Imran Khan said he was considering going on hunger strike if he continued to be denied justice.

Speaking to reporters after attending the trial in the $190 million corruption case on Friday, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said the decision on such cases should be taken on the basis of “like or dislike” as all citizens are equal before the law.

He said all other cases involving the PTI were settled before Chief Justice Isa despite his lawyer's objection to the presence of the chief justice on the bench. The PTI founder said his legal team wanted these cases to be moved out of Courtroom 1, according to the Dawn report.

Imran Khan reiterated his allegation that Adiala Jail was being run by a colonel or a major and added that the jail superintendent was serving “under their command” which did not allow him to meet PTI leaders.

Some PTI leaders had come to the jail to meet Imran Khan over the party's internal disputes, but the jailer, as per the instructions of the military officer, did not allow them to meet Imran Khan for at least three hours, Dawn reported. Imran Khan said he was considering the decision to go on hunger strike and would do so if he was denied justice.

Speaking to reporters, Khan said he would advise his party leaders not to make internal differences public as it would divert attention from the real cause. The PTI founder further said that the recent budget had already buried the politics of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
