LASD West Hollywood vehicle crashes into Lexus on Santa Monica Blvd

A West Hollywood Sheriff A Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) SUV crashed into a black Lexus on July 4. The incident occurred in front of the Tail O' The Pup hot dog stand at Santa Monica Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard, blocking the right eastbound lane of traffic for hours.

According to a West Hollywood sheriff's deputy, around 4:30 p.m., an Uber driver pulled over in front of the sheriff's SUV, causing a head-on collision. The deputy tried to avoid hitting the Uber driver and accidentally hit the black Lexus in the right lane. The Uber driver, who was deemed responsible for the sudden stop, was cited as the cause of the crash. The damage appears to be minor, but an investigation has closed the eastbound right lane. No one was injured.

Pursuant to Highway Code 22109 CVC, California law prohibits motorists from suddenly stopping or reducing the speed of a vehicle without first giving an appropriate signal when there is an opportunity to do so.

Any violation of this section of the code is punishable by a fine of $238. Drivers who fail to comply with this law may be the victims of a rear-end collision.

The text of the law states:

No person shall stop or suddenly reduce the speed of a vehicle on a public highway without first giving an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this Chapter to the driver of any vehicle immediately behind him where it is possible to give such a signal.

Examples of unlawful acts include:

stopping a vehicle without giving an appropriate hand signal,
braking suddenly with unusable brake lights,
stopping quickly near crosswalks or stop signs without any corresponding arm signal.

Penalties

A violation of California Traffic Law Section 22109 is an infraction, different from a felony or misdemeanor.

The traffic violation is punishable by:

a maximum fine of $238, and
a point is assigned to the driver's driving record with the DMV.
