In recent years, historically black colleges and universities have seen a resurgence in popular culture, with many notable figures graduating from an HBCU. On day two of the Suede Mens Experience at ESSENCE Festival of Culture, Lance Gross, Terrence J, and Luke Lawal sat down with Jahliel Thurman to discuss the impact of their college journey and its aftermath.

All of the men on the panel were fraternity members. Gross, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and the three other members of Omega Psi Phi all emphasized the importance of fraternity in their lives. “Every time I walk into a room, there’s always an Omega man looking out for me,” Terrence J. said. “I know we talk and we joke around and it’s all fun and games, but at the end of the day, it’s all about support.”

The three also discussed how the HBCU connection helped them succeed in their careers through networking with other alumni in high-powered positions. Lawal also emphasized the power of perseverance, no matter what field you’re in.
