Expats living in the United States say the best part of living here is having plenty of career opportunities, but for many, the high cost of living makes it a difficult experience.

The United States ranks 35th best country for expats out of 53 countries worldwide, according to the latest Expat Insider report from InterNations, the global community for people living abroad.

The report, which takes into account responses to a survey of more than 12,500 expats worldwide, covers their satisfaction across five key indicators: quality of life, ease of settling in, working abroad, personal finances and “expat essentials” such as the ability to find accommodation and navigate the local language.

Among these indices, the United States ranks first for “working abroad.”

The United States stands out for its local job market and career prospects for expats, according to respondents. Expats say the local business culture promotes flexibility and that 65% of people are happy in their jobs, compared to 60% of people who feel the same globally.

However, foreigners feel that the work culture in the United States is not great. Expats who work full-time in the United States report working an average of 43.7 hours per week, compared to the global average of 42.5 hours. They also point to limited vacation time as a factor that negatively impacts their experience.

Outside of work, about half, or 52%, of expats in the United States say they are dissatisfied with the overall cost of living, compared with 39% of expats worldwide who feel the same way.

The biggest financial barriers are housing, healthcare and transportation costs, especially in areas without robust public transportation infrastructure where people must rely on cars. Only 31% of expats in the US say they are satisfied with their living expenses, compared to 40% globally.

Newcomers say Americans are generally friendly, but also express difficulty making friends and integrating into social life.

Overall, expats in the United States highly value the country for its robust digital access (ranging from high-speed internet to the use of digital payments), ease of navigation in the local language, leisure options, and welcoming culture.

According to InterNations survey data, the average age of expats in the United States is around 48 years old. The main reasons for moving to the United States are to attend school or university (16%), being sent by their employer (12%) or their partner's job (10%). Those who work in the United States are more likely to work in the financial, healthcare or information technology sectors.

According to InterNations, the most popular countries for expats this year are Panama, Mexico and Indonesia.
