Daryl Hall at the Masonic Temple Theatre, 5 things to know – Daily Tribune
Since 1972, he has been best known as a member of one of the best-selling duos in music history. But today, Daryl Hall is happy living alone again.
In reality, he and John Oates were together for more than a decade, as a touring band, and worked on other projects separately. But they split, apparently for good, over business issues. Hall notably sued Oates last year for trying to sell his share of their joint company, Whole Oats Enterprises, without his consent. A reconciliation seems unlikely, but they leave behind a formidable legacy: sales of more than 80 million records worldwide, 20 Top 40 hits, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Last month, Hall, 77, released a new solo album, “D,” his first entirely new album in 11 years. Recorded in the Bahamas and co-produced with Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, the nine-song album is musically diverse but rooted in the soulful vein that has anchored Hall’s music since his youth. Hall is already planning another album, while in the wake of “D,” he’s also back on the road, this time touring with Elvis Costello…
* Hall said by phone that he was keenly aware of the time that had passed between solo albums. “It’s been a long time. I couldn’t believe[Laughing Down Crying, 2013]was so far away. I don’t know, time flies. I’ve been busy with different things and trying to do what I’m doing, and the years have flown by.”
* Hall began working on “D” in early 2023 on Harbor Island, where he and Stewart both have residences. “It was really just the two of us, with an engineer (Jesse Samier). We worked in one-month increments; we’d do a month, and then I’d go away—I was on the road for a year—and then I’d come back and we’d do another month, and then we’d just connect, which we did pretty recently. I think in some ways it was better to take breaks, because every time we came back to it, it was fresh. It was all very spontaneous, very happy, not a lot of thinking, really. It was just, ‘Don’t think, just do,’ and[‘D’]is what came out of it.”
* “D,” he adds, is a “very personal” album, right down to its title, which is the nickname his friends give him. “The album is a complete reflection, and we organized the songs to accompany us on a journey. We hit a low point with ‘I’d Rather Be a Fool’ – that song is completely autobiographical – and then we started to climb back up to a new and better world. We didn’t write the songs with that in mind, but when we realized what we had, we put it all together into a story, into a progression.”
* On the situation with Oates, Hall says: “John and I didn't have a creative relationship for decades; the last song I wrote with John was in 2000, and it was with someone else. We toured and toured and toured, and it was very restrictive for me and for John. The truth is, John said one day he didn't want to do this anymore. I said, 'OK,' but the problem was that Oates didn't make it easy to separate and break up, and that's where the difficulties arose and still arise, and that's it. I always say I've been a solo artist my whole life, I've just worked with John, most of the time.”
* Hall also continues to work on his “Live From Daryl’s House” series, which he relaunched last year on YouTube. “Instead of doing full seasons, we’re thinking about doing two episodes at a time and releasing them. Every now and then we’ll release a few; that way it doesn’t take too much time away from other things that I’m doing, because it really does take time. So that’s the plan; I don’t know what the next episodes are going to be yet, but there’ll probably just be a few new ones that come out.”
