The new Home Secretary wasted no time getting into the role, creating the Border Security Command (BSC) just days after taking office.

The BSC was one of the cornerstones of Sir Keir Starmer's manifesto and was the solution to Labour's small boat crisis.

The plan is being funded at least in part by a $75 million transfer from a now-canceled Rwanda program.

Yvette Cooper has taken the first steps towards setting up the British Border Security, which promises to “strengthen Britain's border security and crack down on criminal smuggling networks that make millions using small boats”.

The plan includes a rapid recruitment of “outstanding leaders” starting tomorrow.

'We can't go on like this'

The new hire, who is expected to take up his position in the coming weeks, will report directly to the Office of the Secretary of the Interior.

They will be tasked with providing “strategic direction” to all agencies, including the National Crime Agency, police, immigration enforcement and border patrol.

Mrs Cooper is also preparing early legislation introducing new counter-terrorism powers for the BSC and has commissioned an investigation into the routes and tactics used by smuggling networks.

She said it would be a “significant change” to Britain's efforts to tackle organised immigration crime, and would see it co-ordinated “pan-Europe” and work with prosecutors across the continent.

“We cannot go on like this,” she said, adding that the BSC would represent a “significant upgrade” to the immigration system Labor inherited.
